California Lap Band Surgery
LAP-BAND® System
Similar to gastric bypass surgery, lap band surgery is peformed laparoscopically and is minimally invasive. However, gastric band surgery works by only portion control, and does not create any malabsorption. It consists of an inflatable silicone band that is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a new small upper stomach pouch and narrowed stoma. The size of the stoma can be adjusted by adding or removing saline from the band, thus controlling the flow rate of food from the upper to lower part of the stomach. No cutting or stapling of the stomach is required, and because the stomach and intestines are not bypassed, there is little risk of vitamin or mineral deficiencies.
Studies have shown that gastric bypass surgery generally results in more rapid weight loss than with lap band surgery, but at 3 years and beyond the weight loss is similar for both approaches (50%-60% excess weight loss).
The LAP-BAND® System can be removed at any time, generally without altering anatomy.
The REALIZE Band
How does it work?
The REALIZE Personalized Banding Solution makes you feel full sooner which results in less food consumed at one time and makes it easier for you to participate in healthy eating and lifestyle habits.
The adjustable REALIZE Band divides the stomach into two parts: a small upper pouch and a lower stomach. The upper pouch can only hold about 4 ounces (1/2 cup) of food. For this reason, you will feel full sooner and longer than usual.
